Government will amend the Employments Rights Act (ERA) to remove problems associated with it.

Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer Suckoo made the disclosure today, following complaints by trade unionists that employers were using “weaknesses” in the new legislation to roll back some of the benefits workers had gained over the years.

The minister conceded that since the legislation was proclaimed some challenges had arisen regarding the way sections were interpreted and applied.

She said her ministry would invite consultation on the act as well as submissions on it interpretation and implementation with a view to improving the ERA.

She made the comments while addressing the 73rd Annual Delegates’ Conference of the Barbados Workers’ Union.
