BARBADOS?will leave this year’s Commonwealth Games with just one medal after this country’s last remaining hope, Kierre Beckles, finished sixth in the final of the women’s 100 metres hurdles in Glasgow, Scotland, yesterday.
Beckles, who had the slowest reaction time of the eight finalists, crossed the line in 13.38 secs, well behind a strong field spearheaded by Olympic queen Sally Pearson of Australia.
The 24-year-old Beckles, winner of the Austin Sealy Trophy for the most outstanding athlete of the 2008 Carifta Games in St Kitts and Nevis, was hoping to join another hurdler, Shane Brathwaite on the podium. Brathwaite, who is also 24, won bronze in the men’s equivalent a few days ago.
Pearson, 27, who had the fastest reaction time of 0.122 secs, won gold in 12.67 seconds, to defeat rival Britain’s Tiffany Porter and Canada’s Angela Whyte.
