BRIDGETOWN, May 20, CMC – Foreign ministers and diplomatic officials from Mexico and the 15-nation Caribbean Community (CARICOM) met here Sunday as they prepared for Monday’s summit here between Mexican President Felipe Calderon and the 15-nation, mostly English-speaking, bloc.
Barbados’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Senator Maxine McClean chaired the meeting at the Barbados Hilton, on the edge of the capital, Bridgetown, as the two sides were expected to advance talks on trade, investment, tourism, cooperation and international relations.
CARICOM Chairman, Surinamese President Desi Bouterse, President Calderon and CARICOM Secretary-General Irwin LaRocque are to address the Mexico-CARICOM summit’s opening at 10.30 a.m (1430 GMT) Monday.
On Friday, officials convened the sixth meeting of the Mexico-CARICOM joint commission, the oldest of CARICOM’s joint diplomatic fora with influential states. It also follows up on the first summit between the bloc and the North American nation, held in Mexico in 2010.
