As REDjet passengers from Barbados enter a second month without refunds following the carrier’s indefinite suspension of flights, the waiting game is about to end for displaced customers in Guyana, with that government giving their money back.
The government will be dipping into a US$200 000 bond, which the Barbados-based REDjet was required to put in place on start-up to compensate customers who were unable to travel because of the suspension.
Minister of Transport and Public Works Robeson Benn made the disclosure to the SATURDAY SUN yesterday – exactly a year since REDjet launched operations with flights to Georgetown – following a Guyana Chronicle newspaper advertisement that advised passengers to submit requests for refunds to the permanent secretary in his ministry.
“We’re collecting information from people now with the intention of making refunds . . . if they [REDjet] do not make the refunds for the passengers,” Benn said. “If by May 31 we would not have heard from REDjet, or REDjet would not have compensated, then we will start making payments from the bond.”
