Action call on Barbados Plan

PERCEPTION IS GREATER than reality for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) looking to make their imprint on the world regarding sustainable development.
But Barbados’ Minister of Environment and Drainage Dr Denis Lowe has warned that it’s time to shed the “well off” mantra that has plagued developing countries like Barbados and finally adopt a method that was approved right here in Barbados 18 years ago but remains to be implemented.
According to Lowe, next month’s Rio+20 Conference in Brazil is the perfect place for SIDS to show where they have come from and where they intend to go, using the Barbados Plan Of Action programme for sustainable development of its members.
Firstly, however, the minister believes SIDS need to get their houses in order by abandoning the notion that certain members were better off than others, and instead band together as a united force.
