WINNING THE Barbados Triple Crown is the dream of all three-year-old owners.
This year could be the turn of Mark Armstrong as his adoring colt Aston Martin easily won the first jewel – Barbados Guineas over 1 570 metres – of the Barbados Triple Crown Series.
For his trainer Victor Cheeseman, taking the Triple Crown will be the highlight of his career as very few trainers have accomplished this feat. Success in this series for him will not only position him among an elite six but move his career to the next level.
The six that have swept the Barbados Guineas 1570 metres, the Midsummer Creole Classic over 1 800 metres and the Barbados Derby over 2 000 metres are Freddie Thirkell with Watersmeet in 1973; Arnold Alleyne – Ginger Lily in 1980; William C. Marshall – Coo Bird in 1989; Challenor Jones – Incitatus in 1996; Naz Issa – Zouk in 2006 and Saffie Joseph Jnr – Areutalkintome in 2009.
