FOR MORE THAN 50 years, Douglas Sobers has been making a living from the sea.
He is not a fisherman, however, but a diver.
“I’m a diver – once the sea is good, I would go out two to three times a week,” he said.
But Sobers does not go after fish when he dives, but seashells. He has been selling seashells by the seashore in Speightstown, St Peter after relocating from Cherry Tree Hill late last year.
“From the time I was young, I have always loved the sea. It has been my main source of income for more than 50 years,” he said.
Sobers said he dived for “90 per cent” of his wares and the rest he imported.
Selling natural jewellery by his side, wife Annie said business was an up-and- down process.
“I only work with natural materials like wood and shells and the straps are made from leather. We get a few sales once in a while.?Some days you do, some you don’t,” she said.
Douglas gave his own views of how business was going. He said he had seen better days but he had no plans of going anywhere.
“It was better when Almond [Beach Village] was open but I’m not afraid I won’t make a living. Once people keep buying, I will be here,” Douglas said. (CA)
