This year’s Olympic Day celebrations are all about engaging the general public of Barbados.
Under the theme Move, Learn, Discover, Barbadians will be encouraged to take part in sporting activities, learn about sports and discover new things on Sunday, June 27, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Barbadians are being encouraged to join the large sporting family in the environs of the Olympic Centre, Wildey, St Michael. The process starts with a parade and brief opening ceremony, during which Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) president Steve Stoute will read the Olympic Day message.
Details were recently revealed by Dave Farmer, head of the Olympic Academy, during a Press briefing at the Olympic Centre. “The annual event celebrates the founding of the Olympic Movement and all that it represents through its many programmes,” Farmer said.“The national federations will use this opportunity to showcase their sport to the attending public. The public, in many instances, will have the opportunity to try a new sport or to try sports skills which make up any specific sport, so this would be the discovery and the learning part of the theme.”
At 3 p.m., there will be registration for the Olympic Day walk and run which will be held one hour later in the environs of the Olympic Centre. Participants will receive a certificate of participation and a T-shirt.
In addition, corporate Barbados will also be involved by showcasing their equipment, and there will be product sampling of sport-related food and drink.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation will distribute literature and conduct blood pressure testing, and members of the National Task Force for Exercise and Physical Activity will also be present.
On Saturday, June 26, there will be a beach cleanup at the Drill Hall Beach from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., showcasing the link between sports and the environment. The Olympic Museum will also be open on that day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. (SAT)
