STUDENTS TOLD HOW AND WHEN

THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING when to use Standard English as opposed to dialect or Internet slang was impressed upon the students of the St Lawrence Primary yesterday.
Teacher Julia Agard said dialect was a part of Barbadian culture and not something to be embarrassed about, but students needed to know the appropriate time to use it.
As the school continued its Reading Week activities (under the theme Read to Build Our Nation), Agard, who is also coordinator of the activities, added that although Barbados had been acclaimed for its literacy rate, it had also been identified for problems in reading and understanding what is read.
During yesterday’s activities the students of Classes 2, 3 and 4 were treated to a puppet show as well as a reading session with surfing champion Brian Talma.
