WITH PLACARDS in hand, around 20 employees of the Land Tax Department continued protest action today against the leaky ceilings, falling tiles, strong odors and fungi which they have had to endure in the Fairchild Street building for many years.
The initial protest action began on November 4 and staff reiterated their call to be relocated as a matter of urgency.
“A couple months ago, we were told that we were moving to the new building in Warrens. Everybody was working because the intention was we were working because we were going to Warrens…[then] we were told that Warrens might not be in the picture. This is unreasonable,” said one irate worker who chose not to be identified.
“The Land Tax department [has] always given excellent service for the government. We have worked through all circumstances – no heat, no elevators, place smell musty…
“It is sickening saying that we can’t go to Warrens. They are trying to find somewhere to put us. You mean that we could see a light at the end of the tunnel now they took away the light and it black like night?”
Wayne Walrond of the National Union of Public Workers said temporary accommodation had to be found as a matter of urgency. (LW)
