Sir Branford steps down

The hunt is on for a President of the Senate.
That’s because Sir Branford Taitt has demitted the office after a lengthy absence due to illness.
According to the Constitution of Barbados Chapter 5, Part 1, 40 (1), whenever the office of President becomes vacant for any reason other than a dissolution of Parliament, another senator has to be elected to fill the post “not later than its second sitting after the vacancy has arisen”.
A Senate source said yesterday that two names often mentioned as a replacement for Sir Branford are Deputy President Kerry-Ann Ifill and veteran trade unionist Sir Roy Trotman.
Yesterday, in a brief comment, Sir Branford said he thought the time was right for his departure.
