NOT EVEN THE substantial increase in women applying for jobs in the Royal Barbados Police Force has been enough to satisfy the number of vacancies available, says Prime Minister Freundel Stuart.
Speaking in the House of Assembly yesterday, he said Barbados needed much more than a few good men to satisfy the requirements of the force, as he reiterated the warning that Barbadians will eventually have to warm themselves to the idea that importing overseas-trained police from around the Caribbean is the next viable option.
He said that though the notion of importing officers would be considered “meat too strong for this country’s digestion”, Barbados simply does not have enough police to properly deal with every aspect of law enforcement.
Yesterday, a senior police official informed the DAILY NATION that at least 100 constables were needed in the first instance. But the source noted a high percentage of people applying to become cops were failing background checks and polygraph tests, two areas the administration had developed to ensure a force devoid of corruption.
