“AS A SCHOOL we have a lot to be proud of as we continue year after year to work towards becoming a truly professional learning community or, as some would prefer to say, a community of learners,” said Michael Watson, principal of Roland Edwards Primary School.
Delivering remarks at the school’s 23rd anniversary service, the principal added: “We continue to work towards ensuring that our pupils learn as much as they can every day, developing a culture of collaboration and cooperation between and among the various stakeholders – staff, pupils, parents, community, Ministry of Education [and so on].”
He also spoke of a clear focus on results – whether on pupils’ performance in class, end of term or year exams, the criterion reference test, or the 11-plus exam.
“Improved pupil performance is therefore the key to everything we do here,” Watson explained.
“Here at Roland Edwards Primary we believe that there is a direct relationship between positive behaviour and improved student performance.”
Hence, he said, the introduction of a programme of excellence that rewards students for excellence.
Francilla Haynes, chairperson of Roland Edwards Primary School, said in her address: “The motto of the school – together we strive, together we achieve – is no doubt responsible for the climate and ethos of the school.
“Twenty-three years ago when St Peter’s Girls’ and Speightstown Boys’ were amalgamated,” she said.
“I am sure it had its share of teething problems like any merger or marriage, but the solid foundation that was created then by working and striving together has resulted in the success it has today.”
During the two-hour-plus service, the talent of the school was demonstrated in song, music and poetry.
A mural was also unveiled, which some Class 3 students helped artist Petra Haynes to paint, and the principal presented some students with their merit badges. (RL)
