Victims of human trafficking are not coming forward, and this is hindering the prosecution of perpetrators, says Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite.
Brathwaite was responding to members of the media on Monday following the opening of a three-day Trafficking In Persons (TIP) training workshop at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus.
The latest TIP report stated that Barbados “does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking”.
However, Brathwaite said the difficulty in prosecuting someone for trafficking humans and subsequently eliminating the scourge was that “it must be based on evidence” and local authorities were simply not getting any”. (MM)
