Inniss, Mia clash on ‘education cut’

Will a Barbados Labour Party administration cut financial support to education and health care in Barbados? Minister of Health Donville Inniss says yes.
The issue was the source of a heated back-and-fourth between the St James South Member of Parliament and former Opposition Leader Mia Mottley during debate in the House of Assembly yesterday on a resolution to lease a parcel of land at Lower Collymore Rock, St Michael to the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) Chronic Disease Research Centre (CDRC).
What started out as a presentation praising the work on the CDRC and the UWI ended up as a verbal battle between Inniss and Mottley over whether the Opposition party’s position was to cut future financial support to the two areas that consumed a substantial portion of the island’s national budget.
As Mottley stood at least six times on a point of order to rebut Inniss’ contention, the Health Minister then quoted from Opposition Leader Owen Arthur’s presentation last week to the Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s luncheon meeting to support his contention. (GE)
