KINGSTON – Jamaica police were today questioning two of the island’s popular and controversial dancehall deejays after naming them as persons of interest in relation to a series of criminal activities.
Police said that Mavado, whose real name is David Brooks, was accompanied by his lawyer Chris Tavares-Finson when he turned himself in to the authorities.
The other artiste, Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adijah Palmer, was also accompanied by his lawyer, Valerie Nieta-Robertson when he surrendered to the police.
The authorities said that both men have considerable influence in the neighbouring communities of “Big Yard” and “Cassava Piece”.
The Jamaica Observer newspaper reported that gangs from both communities were at loggerheads for months during which several murders and shootings were committed. However a truce between both artistes led to a lull in the violence earlier this year. (CMC)
