TONNES of garbage were finally removed from the old Fairchild Street Market by the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) yesterday evening after THE?NATION?had drawn the unsanitary conditions to the attention of officials.
Vendors in the area called the newspaper office to complain that they were being affected by the pungent stench, flies and rodents.
They said the garbage had accumulated over several weeks.
Corporate communications officer of the SSA, Carl Padmore, who arranged the swift clean-up, said SSA trucks went to the area on several occasions but could not gain access because vehicles were blocking the gate. He said too, that the truck which arrived to remove the overflowing skip could not do so because heavy, discarded construction material had been dumped in it, increasing its weight.
Padmore said the area had become one of the illegal dump sites in The City and it was proving problematic for the SSA.
