Building contractors and other small business people stand to benefit from an “affordable housing” project Government recently launched in Lancaster, St James.
During a tour of the project yesterday, Minister of Housing and Lands Michael Lashley told reporters that though contracts were still to be awarded a number of small building firms would find work.
The project consists of ten residential lots, which will provide facilities for small business people, including body care specialists such as nail technicians, Lashley told reporters.
In the “total community” Government was trying to build through the project, provision would be made for day care and minimart facilities, according to Lashley.
The project, managed by the National Housing Corporation, involves the building of 87 wood and wall houses.
Construction is expected to start in December or early January 2011. The main contractor is C.O. Williams Construction Limited.
The project is one of a number being financed under a $40 million package, with funding from FirstCaribbean International Bank (Barbados) Limited.
The project is being carried out in two phases. One involves the construction of 45 houses.
