Two club teams will represent Barbados at the upcoming Guyana International race meet, featuring Round 3 of the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC). It will take place at the South Dakota Circuit, Temehri, on Saturday and Sunday.
CMRC representative in Barbados and secretary of the newly-formed club, Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc., (BPMSI) Kurt Seabra, said the team would contest the final leg of the 2013 Seaboard Marine CMRC and Seaboard GP2 Series.
The team of Doug Maloney in the Paints Plus/Maloney Racing Team Audi A4 Quattro, his son Mark Maloney in the Automotive Art/Valvoline/Digicel/RBC Royal Bank/Maloney Racing Team Mazda RX3, will contest the CMRC Group 4.
Kurt Thompson, in the 2.0L Monster Energy/Beacon Insurance/Glassesco/DC Security/Bio Beauty Day Spa Honda CRX, Mark Thompson in the Stag Beer/Glassesco/Local Speed/NKM Clothing/Bio Beauty Day Spa 1.6L Toyota Starlet, Peter Thompson in the 2.0L Monster Energy/Beacon Insurance/Glassesco/DC Security/Bio Beauty Day Spa Honda Civic, and Steve King who will be driving the Valvoline/Percy King Auto Parts 1.6L Toyota Starlet and former CMRC GP 2 champion Kenrick Husbands driving the Ultra Oils/Hilti/ Williams Equipment Toyota Starlet and Terrence Ollivierre who is entered in the 600cc Super Bikes competition riding a Suzuki GSXR600, will also fly the Barbados flag on the South American continent.
Doug Maloney is currently second in points, having contested Round 1 in the CMRC in Jamaica in May. In fact, he is one of only three drivers who completed all the races at Round 1, with a second and some third-place finishes, while Kurt Thompson is currently second in the Seaboard GP2 for 2.0L cars.
Reigning Seaboard GP2 champion Mark Thompson is currently fourth and like his brother Kurt, is highly fancied to take top honours since some of the competitors who currently lead after Round 1 are sitting out the Guyana outing.
The other team to the Guyana international is from the Barbados Auto Racing League (BARL), represented by Ryan Wood, Carl Bovell, Derek Herbert, who will all be competing in Toyota Starlets, Seth-Ross Turney who will be at the wheel of a Honda CRX, first-timer Andre Walcott in a the Courts i-Finance Suzuki Swift Kenrick ‘Snappa’ Husbands and Quincy Jones.
All the cars from Barbados are already in Guyana and should be ready for qualifying on Saturday. Racing will take place in earnest the following day at the same venue.
However, apart from the Superbikes where Guyana’s Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’ Vieira will be looking to stamp his authority on the proceedings, it is felt that the highlight of the meeting could be a showdown between Jamaica’s Doug Gore in an Audi TT, Doug and Mark Maloney, and Guyanese drivers Kevin Jeffrey, Andrew King and Paul and Mark Vieira.
