The head of the island’s Inland Revenue department is upset.
Not only is he displeased with the number of self-employed professionals who are refusing to file income tax returns and who have been refusing to do so for decades, but he feels the recent reprimands and discharges, imposed by one Bridgetown Magistrate, are slaps on the wrist.
Commissioner of Inland Revenue Frank Forde told the WEEKEND NATION the punishment sends the wrong message and he is now contemplating whether the department should pursue prosecution of other people.
“The law says not less than $10 and not more than $10 000. So the question is how can you reprimand and discharge these people?” he asked rhetorically.
