Cell four opened

Government is taking the first steps towards eliminating the need for landfills in Barbados.
During an opening ceremony for the 6.5 hectare, $25 million cell four of the Mangrove Pond Landfill yesterday on the grounds of the Central Country Club in Vaucluse, St Thomas, Minister of the Environment Dr Denis Lowe said Barbados was too small to continue having to find places to dispose of garbage.
“Cell four is part and parcel of an integrated system designed to reduce and eventually remove the use of landfilling. Because Barbados is such a small land space, it is unsustainable that we can continue to build landfills around the country,” he said.
According to Lowe, it was now a matter of converting waste to energy rather than simply burying it, and this was perfect for Barbados.
