Already at an all-time low, boxing in Barbados suffered an embarrassing TKO on Saturday night.
As the Super Gladiators calypso tent was being judged next door, the real combatants were out in full force at the Netball Stadium, with spectators and fans storming the ring.
They almost forced the abandonment of the Amateur Boxing Association of Barbados’ (ABAB) Lionel Hall Memorial Tournament.
The incident occurred in the first round of the penultimate bout of the 12-event card, where the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme’s Cobia Breedy was taking on St Lucia’s Dalton “Hurricane” George in a light welterweight match.
After receiving several warnings from the referee, along with some jabs from the powerfully built Breedy, George pushed away the official, who had stopped the fight due to an infringement, and ran towards a shocked Breedy, punching him repeatedly.
