The labour movement in Barbados is sending a strong warning to Government and the private sector for 2019.
In New Year messages, president of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB), Edwin O’Neal, called on Government to return to the negotiating table with trade unions; while Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) general secretary Toni Moore said her union must be intimately involved in the changes taking place in the labour force.
O’Neal said while there was hope the economy would turn in 2019, “the reality remains that workers in both the public and private sectors who are employed, will recommence work under the fear of being a casualty of the ongoing retrenchment programme”.
He said CTUSAB recognised the need for a “leaner public service”, but growth was important, jobs had to be protected and there were other ways to reduce the workforce. (SAT)
