Minister of Education Ronald Jones says he will be relooking the ban on cellphones in all schools as the technology is an “admirable” and “superior” learning tool that must be a part of the 21st century classroom.
But that plan is not going down well with at least one teachers’ union.
In what is a complete about-turn on the use of cellphones, Jones, highlighting the many functions his newly acquired smartphone could perform, said he knew what they could do and the only thing educators needed to ensure was that the “ethical use” of the technology was taught.
He was delivering the feature address at the opening of a six-week workshop for primary school teachers, titled Science Teacher Readiness For 21st Century Classrooms, at Erdiston Teachers’ Training College yesterday.
The minister said that even though classrooms had changed, the subjects were oftentimes not engaging because children were advanced with technology.
