A ST MICHAEL COUPLE is praising quick action by a Good Samaritan and the Barbados Fire Service for saving their two-storey Fountain Road, Carrington Village home.
The blaze occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, totally destroying the unoccupied house next to theirs.
According to David Gill, cousin of Anderson McClean who owns the house, the couple and their son were apparently awakened by the noise of the fire.
McClean’s wife Lydia noticed a ball of fire gushing to the sky. They grabbed their son and made their way downstairs to the outside of the building.
“It must have been a passer-by or some resident who informed the fire service and they told me the fire officials were pretty prompt,” said Gill, who spoke on behalf of the family.
He added that about eight windows on the right side of the McClean’s home were damaged by the blaze along with some of its supporting structures.
Gill said a vagrant was seen living in the derelict property and the suspicion is that he could have something to do with the fire.
He said Anderson had already informed his insurance company and was trying to get an estimate. The boy had gone to school, but Lydia was shaken up by the experience and preferred not to speak to the media at this time. (SP)
