Disabled seeking help with transport costs

PRESIDENT of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Barbados Bonita Phillips is calling for public assistance to finance transportation for the group’s members.
She made the appeal last Friday at the Richard Haynes Boardwalk in Hastings, Christ Church, where a portable Landeez beach wheelchair worth $7 000 was donated to the group by the Barbados Community Foundation.
Phillips said the society, which solicited funds through a sponsored walk on Friday, was in need of the transportation to get  to meetings and carry out other activities.
“We use the Barbados Council for the Disabled’s bus and we use the National Disabilities Unit’s bus but when those are unavailable we have to use a taxi,” she explained.
“Last year the society paid out over $10 000 in transportation costs and that is just to get to meetings.” (AH)
