Farming’s No.2 in water use

THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR is the second largest water user in Barbados.
Manager of engineering at the Barbados Water Authority (BWA), Dr John Mwansa, told the DAILY NATION agriculture accounted for eight to ten million gallons a day based on water abstraction licences granted for irrigation.
Agriculture runs second to domestic consumption, which accounts for 13 million gallons per day. This means that those two take up the majority of the 33 to 34 million gallons pumped daily.
Mwansa was speaking after a seminar at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus on The Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources in Barbados.
