FEARING?sanctions from the Barbados Hockey Federation (BHF), dozens of players have opted to bypass the controversial seven-a-side University of the West Indies (UWI) Club Championships, forcing its cancellation.
Programme assistant at UWI’s Academy of Sport, Nevin Roach, told NATIONSPORT yesterday the tournament, slated for this weekend at the artificial field at the Cave Hill Campus, was off because clubs and players had pulled out.
“It is not going to happen at this stage. We haven’t had the response from the clubs and players. We can’t force anyone to play,” Roach said.
He added UWI would seek BHF permission to stage the tournament later in the year, with October/November the likely time frame.
