The spotlights were off at the world famous Kensington Oval yesterday because of an unpaid bill.
The historic cricket ground, which is hosting the Tri-Nation Twenty20 Series, had its electricity disconnected for a short time before management scrambled to take care of a reported $400 000 utility bill and avoid international embarrassment. Kensington is the venue for the series that is being played between West Indies, New Zealand and England women’s teams.
Chief executive officer of Kensington Oval Management Inc (KOMI), Ben Toppin, neither denied nor confirmed the report yesterday, but said “we had an issue this morning, it is a non-issue now”. KOMI is the entity that manages the 12.5 acre multi-purpose facility, which is also a venue for national events and major entertainment shows.
Reports are that the Barbados Light & Power turned up and disconnected the power from outside the property after the bill remained unpaid for a number of months. Sources said that the average monthly bill of the Oval is about $60 000. (AC)
