It is costing the island’s largest egg producer about $1 million to ensure Barbados does not experience an egg shortage this Christmas season.

Chickmont Food Ltd on Monday revealed it had increased output by 25 per cent and was producing about 60 000 eggs per day.

Speaking to THE NATION during a tour of Chickmont’s processing facility in Balls, Christ Church, by Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Indar Weir and other agricultural officials, chairman Peter Defreitas gave the assurance there would be no shortage for the season.

“We increased because one of the main suppliers was experiencing challenges,” he said. “Coming out of the issues last year, we increased our production tremendously, and going forward we have more than enough eggs to supply.” (SB)
