Rear riders

It’s illegal. It’s dangerous. And the Royal Barbados Police wants to see an end to it. But Barbadians simply won’t stop riding on the rear of open-back vehicles.
Just a few days after Inspector Leon Blades of the Police’s Traffic Division lamented how many people, including children, continued to practise the dangerous habit, it popped up again.
Our roving photographer Lennox Devonish took a snapshot of this open-back vehicle transporting four people, as well as heavy cargo, along the ABC Highway.
The vehicle had just turned out of the Ministry of Agriculture’s Graeme Hall, Christ Church headquarters.
A pedestrian at a crossing waits for the overloaded vehicle to pass before heading to the other side. (BA)
