ILLEGAL DRUGS and the Internet are just two of the evils against which mothers have to guard as they raise their children in today’s society.
“Many have lost their jobs through layoffs and retrenchment,” said Spouge icon and the man behind Mum, This One’s For You show, Desmond ‘Fowl’ Weekes.
“For some, keeping loved ones from the trap of illicit drugs is a constant struggle. And technology, like the Internet, is adding to the problem,” he said, adding it was now competing “with parents to shape the minds of our children”.
Weekes was speaking as he announced that this year’s show would be honouring the mothers of sports people and entertainers during its 14th edition, slated for May 11 at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.
Mothers to be honoured include Margot Tuach, mother of surfer Chelsea Tuach; Lorraine Smith, mother of cricketer Dwayne Smith, and Margaret Yearwood, mother of entertainer Edwin Yearwood.
“These mothers are but a few of the countless unsung heroines in Barbados. In our opinion, they are worthy of being held up as role models. Their children, who are recognised as outstanding Barbadian personalities, could not have climbed the ladder of success on their own,” Weekes said.
As he urged Barbadians to pray for all mothers, Weekes, of Draytons Two fame, said by honouring mothers the show was also hoping to encourage and support young mothers “to be good examples”.
In addition, the organiser said he would also be honouring the parents of two specially challenged children and partnering with the Barbados Workers’ Union to recognise two domestic workers.
There would be a week of activities, including a church service at St Cyprian’s Church on May 4, leading up to the Mother’s Day show. (HLE)
