TWO-TIME Olympian Seibert Straughn is to replace his former Lodge School colleague Henry Inniss as chairman of the National Sports Council (NSC).
Straughn, 42, a long-striding 400-metre runner during his heyday, represented Barbados at the Olympic Games in South Korea in 1988 and in Barcelona in 1992.
He is presently head of the physical education department at the Christ Church Foundation School, and is expected to continue working in that position.
When contacted yesterday for a comment, Straughn told NATION SPORT that he was awaiting an official announcement from the Minister of Family, Youth and Sport, Stephen Lashley.
Inniss, also a Barbados athlete and former national record holder in the triple jump, recently resigned as NSC chairman to take up the position of chief executive officer of Kensington Oval Management Inc. (KOMI).
A qualified coach, Straughn also managed the Barbados track and field contingent at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
He clocked a career-best time of 45.61 seconds to win the 400 metres at the Texaco Games in Barbados in 1989, paving the way for the popular “Young Lions” relay quartet, which also featured Wade Payne, Terry “Grover” Harewood, Stephen “Suzuki” Roberts, Ronald “Concorde” Thorne.
Over the past two years, Straughn served as chairman of the successful Joel Garner Twenty20 cricket competition. He is also the fitness trainer with the ESA Field Pickwick cricket team.
Meanwhile, another former Lodge School and national athlete, Michael Jules, has landed the job as director of the Barbados Defence Force’s (BDF) Sports Programme.
Jules previously served as manager of the National and Netball Stadiums. (BA)
