TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Shakeria Maynard is the queen of the 2011 Holetown Festival.
Maynard was crowned at midnight last Sunday after she was declared the winner in a field of seven who participated in the pageant at St James Secondary.
But the journey to victory was not easy for this University of the West Indies student. She had to endure a fierce battle to win the competition as each competitor put their best foot forward.
Nevertheless, Maynard, who was sponsored by Bajanfuhlife, was a notch above the rest and proved to the judges that she deserved the title.
One of the highlights of the night was Maynard’s Bajanfuhlife dramatic presentation, for which she won Best Talent. Maynard was serious, but it was extremely difficult for the members of the audience to contain their laughter at the humour that accompanied her message.
The presentation started with her waking up to find that her husband, who had gone to bed with her, sitting on a drink crate outside the house with his suitcase beside him, as he made the effort to run away from facing the trials of the economic climate.
To try to find out why her husband was making this move, Maynard reflected on a number of things. She said: “I could understand if I had cheated . . . I could even understand if over the last year he became fed up because [since] BB messenger and Facebook, I can’t remember the last day I cook.”
She wanted to know why the country was “focused on putting Owen against Mia while our ozone drifting away so and instead of studying greenhouse, we studying if the Honourable Freundel Stuart should marry and carry a woman into Ilaro Court”.
Miss Mango Bay Hotel Brittany Worrell placed third and also took home the Miss Congeniality trophy. Miss Soft & Silky Lisa-Marie Roach placed second and also won the Best Designer category and the Miss Intimate trophy.
The pageant also featured entertainment from individuals and groups. The entertainers included Ria Borman, Adrian Clarke, and Xtra Hype, among others.
