It’s the 11th edition of the Victor Chandler Stakes & Trophy on Boxing Day – Diamonds International/Mont Blanc and Victor Chandler Race Day – at the Garrison Savannah.
Arguably the finest 12 horses in training are set to contest what looks on paper a riveting spectacle.
There are several variables which will unfold at this event.
From a breeding perspective, it’s imported versus the locally bred horses. One will see Shared Adventure and Discreetwon battling Apostle and Show Me The Money.
Aristodemus’ victory last race day brings him into the equation as he knows what it’s like to defeat Shared Adventure.
Another appetizing twist is the continuing, intriguing battles between Apostle and Show Me The Money.
The three-year-old importeds are definitely the talk of the country but rest assured the older importeds – Giovedi, Daga, Purr Class and Little Man Arran will want to have their say.
Imported horses have dominated this event in the past, winning eight times before Apostle stepped in to mark one for the locally bred horses.
Areyoutalkintome became the second Derby winner after Apostle to land this event when he dead-heated with John Brian in 2009.
Show Me The Money added his name to the history books by taking last year’s edition, and is back to defend his title.
The record in this event shows that front-runners have been dominant, winning no fewer than eight times.
Speaking of speed, the battle of the speedsters will most likely unfold between rivals Apostle, Show Me The Money and Shared Adventure. Very few horses have been able to go the pace with Apostle and survive the trip.
Once race conditions are ideal (good, hard or firm), the track record of (1:33:01) will come under serious threat.
No horse has ever come from the back to win this race and so there is room for the stalkers – Discreetwon, Giovedi, Zoom, Daga and Aristodemus.
Of the above five, it will be a really tough assignment for Discreetwon and Aristodemus, both of whom are at the top of their form but have excelled against minor opposition. This will prove to be a real test.
Giovedi and Zoom have recorded victories over the top rated horses before, so they have a clear picture of what is required.
Erados, Kendal Moon, Little Man Arran and Purr Class will all be expected to be around mid-pack while the race is taking shape.
The last three furlongs of this race are usually the most demanding on young horses going into the big leagues. From there to the finish line is where the top rated horses change gear.
Another critical element of the race is that it can sometimes be used as a gauge for horses seeking a position in the Gold Cup.
