STALL OWNERS in the Fairchild Street Public Market are illegally subletting their stalls for between $150 and $800 a month but are refusing to pay Government its $40 to $50 monthly rental fee.
Calling the act “criminal”, manager of markets Henderson Greaves warned the vendors paying rent to stallholders to stop the practice.
“People have the gall to be renting stalls for $800 a month and when people don’t pay they put a lock on the stall,” he complained.
“It is criminal! Why would you take $800 from someone and don’t pay the Government? No tenant should be subletting. It is in the tenancy agreement,” said an angry Greaves, who read aloud the relevant section of the agreement to the vendors.
