Top Scottish show band the Peatbog Faeries will this year headline at the Celtic Festival Barbados, which started yesterday and ends next Thursday.
Performing live at The Plantation Theatre tonight, they are being supported by the Sandra Macbeth Band that played last year and a troupe of Irish dancers from Canada.
Professor Henry Fraser, in a prelude, will outline the Celtic history of Barbados.
The Peatbog Faeries play melodic haunting Scottish music, as well as lively and loud Celtic rock, reggae and hip hop. They are Peter Morrison (pipes and whistles), Peter Tickell (fiddle), Tom Salter (guitar), Innes Hutton (bass, percussion) Graeme Stafford (keyboards) and Stuart Haikney (drums).
The band has toured all over the world and won numerous awards, including Best Live Act at the prestigious Scots Trad Music Awards and recognition from the BBC in England as best live folk band. The Peatbog Faeries’ inventive and unique approach always brings to audiences a true flavour of traditional Scottish music.
“This will be a fantastic opportunity for Bajans and visitors alike to experience some of the best live music we enjoy in Scotland,” says festival organizer Carol Anderson.
“Peter Morrison plays the pipes and the whistles which lead these haunting melodies, and with the magic of Ross Couper on the fiddle, this will be quite a unique concert which I hope Barbados will embrace!”
Sandra Macbeth and her band, who supported last year’s headline act Eddi Reader, was very popular, and will enchant the audience again with some of her own material.
Sponsored by the Barbados Tourism Authority in London, and the Barbados Beach Club hotel, this year’s Celtic Festival Barbados is attracting visitors to Barbados from the “Celtic” countries of Scotland, Ireland and Wales as well as those with a “Celtic” connection and interest from Canada and the United States.
The weeklong music festival will also see award-winning international chef Paul Wedgwood from Scotland once again heading up the fusion of flavours from Scotland and Barbados, working with local chefs.
