The staff complement at the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is about to be cut in half.
Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) advisor to the general secretary, Sir Roy Trotman, on Monday revealed that the board of the state-owned enterprise was looking to cut 52 per cent of its staff as part of the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme.
But in an attempt to shield willing-to-work staff from facing the harsh reality of unemployment, both CBC and the BWU have agreed to offer packages to those willing to go.
“Our understanding is that CBC will be shedding 116 persons, or 52 per cent of its current staff. That cuts very, very deep and it’s painful – not because we haven’t had other places where we had large numbers, but those were where the numbers were even greater. This is 116 of possibly 230,” Sir Roy said to the media at CBC headquarters following a three-hour meeting with management. (AD)
