Lowe: Land resource difficult to manage

MINISTER of the Environment AND DRAINAGE Dr Denis Lowe says there needs to be greater coordination of land management in the island.
Speaking at the closing ceremony for the Capacity Building And Mainstreaming Of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) project at Hilton Barbados yesterday, Lowe said since the responsibility for land management was fragmented across Government agencies, it was difficult to manage the resource effectively.
“While the Town & Country Planning Department manages overall land use policy, there is no central or high-level agency with the legislative responsibility and oversight of land degradation and land management on the national scale,” he said.
He also said Government needed to develop efficient techniques to achieve maximum results from efforts to protect the coasts as well as terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
