The Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) is not accepting anything other than the last in, first out (LIFO) policy in the retrenchment of public workers.
The union’s firm stance was outlined on Monday by Sir Roy Trotman, advisor to the BWU’s general secretary, following a meeting with the Rural Development Commission (RDC). The BWU had charged the state-owned enterprise had tried to circumvent the policy with its job cuts.
Speaking to THE NATION at the union’s Solidarity House headquarters, Sir Roy explained that RDC acting director Gregory Hinds first contacted the union on October 25, requesting a meeting.
In that correspondence, Hinds indicated the RDC had to terminate 20 of its 58 staff by October 31 as a part of the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme. (AD)
