FEWER NURSES ARE leaving Barbados to seek job opportunities.
This was the word from Chief Nursing Officer Mitchell Clarke yesterday, as he spoke to the media at the St Augustine Anglican Church.
Attending a church service which marked the beginning of the Public Health Nurses Week, Clarke said that while in the early 2000s a large number of local nurses, most specializing in psychiatric care, had migrated, there had since been a reduction in the numbers.
He said this was partly “because England had closed down a lot of their psychiatric hospitals and [then] they had reopened the psychiatric hospitals”.
He added: “Clearly, the nurses in Barbados are not only well trained, but the curriculum that we use in Barbados is similar to the curriculum used in England. So Barbados would have been a prime location to get nurses.” (AH)
