Veteran?baliff?George Alleyne is advising landlords to check with the Barbados Bailiff Association and collection agencies before renting to tenants.
Pointing out that his agency was overwhelmed with as many as 12 cases a week involving tenants with arrears, Alleyne said because of the tough economic conditions some landlords appeared to be renting to people without doing relevant background checks.
And he charged that delinquent tenants were usually repeat offenders.
Alleyne made the comments yesterday as he observed the eviction of Alexander Evans Franco from an apartment complex at Warrens Heights, St Michael.
Franco was ordered to vacate the premises by the court for outstanding rental arrears of $27 000 accumulated over a two-year period. The matter was taken to court by Creditel Collection Agency.
Alleyne charged that Franco was a “regular offender”.
