The imposition of a price cap on regional airlines may not be “realistic”.
That is the view of Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy, who was responding to a suggestion from FAS Entertainment director Al Gilkes that governments should impose a cap on regional airfares in order to promote intraregional travel.
“I don’t know if that is realistic,” Sealy said.
“LIAT is a subregional airline, it is one that is partially owned by the Government of Barbados. Any such decision would have to include the shareholders and presumably the rest of CARICOM. I don’t know to what extent it is realistic.
“What I think is that CARICOM at all levels needs to think about what we can do to make regional travel more affordable. It is as simple as that. This thing impacts people in a very real way.”
