Payne joins chorus for death penalty

CHAIRMAN of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), George Payne, has joined many Barbadians in calling for the return of the death penalty.Payne, speaking yesterday at an annual general meeting of the BLP’s Women’s League at BLP headquarters in Roebuck Street, The City, said the sentence should be carried out if the offenders were found guilty.“I believe we all empathise and sympathise and are in bereavement with the families of those persons who lost their lives in Tudor Street.“On occasions like this, we get a little emotional and like to think that something drastic should be done, but I think this is one situation where I would side with the majority of Barbadians in saying that I believe the question of the death penalty should be looked at,” he said.Payne, referring to the events of last Friday when robbers set clothing store Campus Trendz on fire, killing six young women, said he was speaking as an individual and not on behalf of the BLP as he was unsure what party members’ views were.
