Guyana has appointed a new representative to Barbados, almost two years after the death of Honorary Consul Norman Faria, and it’s hoping the move can help improve trade between the two countries.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett yesterday announced that career diplomat Michael Brotherson would take up the position of Consul General, marking the upgrade of the position from Honorary Consul.
Brotherson’s role will include addressing consular and trade matters in Barbados and overseeing honorary consuls in other Caribbean countries.
“We might be able to increase our trade with Barbados if we have someone there to provide information at hand, meeting with the business community, so we think it augurs well,” Rodrigues-Birkett told a press conference.
Brotherson has served the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guyana for the past 20 years.
During that time he was a CARICOM Desk Officer, Head of the Information Unit and he served in London before returning recently to work in the Office of Climate Change of the Office of the President.
He fills the void left when Faria died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on May 25, 2010 after a brief illness. The late Honorary Consul was a staunch advocate of Guyanese interests in Barbados.
