Amid the throng shopping for that perfect pair of shoes or dress or pants to ring in the New Year, a few parents used the opportunity yesterday to ensure their children were equipped for the new school term as well.
In Cave Shepherd on Broad Street, The City, most parents and guardians were simply picking up a few extra items as they had already done the bulk of their shopping.
“We have everything we need as we had done our shopping for the [school] year since September,” said Jacqueline Cumberbatch, who was with her daughter Jade, a Class 1 student of Roland Edwards Primary School.
Cumberbatch said she had other monetary commitments so she had to be cautious with her spending and make it clear to her daughter what she could and could not afford.
Cathy London and her son Dominic, who is a Class 1 student at St Stephen’s Primary, were shopping for socks and pants. However, she said she did not find things were too expensive.
“I shop here [at Cave Shepherd] or Woolworth or at the factory outlet and I don’t find things are really expensive. We should have done this shopping around Christmas but I was distracted with Christmas shopping, so we will be here an hour at the most and then we’re gone,” she said, adding she had no Old Year’s Night plans.
Oveston Cadogan was one of the few fathers shopping yesterday.
He too said he had completed most of his back-to-school shopping.
“We are just here getting a few extras. Actually, we came looking for crayons,” he added.
His son Trevon is an Infants B student of Charles F. Broome. Cave Shepherd’s manager of corporate communications Hugh Durant said it was the “norm” to see some people buying school supplies at this time of year but it was not a widespread practice.
