SLICE OF LIFE: Saturday at Miami Beach

We approached Enterprise Beach, better known as Miami Beach, from the tract directly to the east of the Bus Terminal and immediate south of Oistins Post Office on Saturday evening about half past five.
As we looked down the little cliff we could see the aquamarine watery basin coloured with a wide spread of sea bathers. From children to much older adults waded in or treading the water seemed to be the order of the day. Very few ventured any great distance beyond the shore.
What has now become a famous landmark at Miami Beach still proudly stands. After 32 years, Mr Delicious Snack Bar, in the form of a stationary vehicle well kept in this salubrious environment, keeps providing Bajan culinary fare like fish cakes, flying fish cutters, coconut punch, cocorumada, and lemonade to beach visitors both local and international. Clover Leacock, wife of co-founder Dwight Leacock, has remained her charming self over the years, efficient but unruffled.
Her support team has followed in her footsteps.
Onto the white sandy shore the navy blue beach umbrella under which a warm, chatty and smiling group huddled helped to create a movie-type character for this idyllic beach scene. From granny Gloria Sealy who has lived in England for over 50 years until her return
in recent years to adoring daughter Maureen Watts and her husband and their children who all spoke with an English accent, the mood was one of family togetherness.
They were clearly captivated by the whole ambience of the beach. The view out to the horizon and down the south coast from their vantage point on the beach was thrilling.
Caught up in this strong emotion they seemed to have forgotten that call-in time for the beach umbrella and chairs had passed. As a not-too-thrilled agent for the beach apparatus provider approached them not as temperate as they expected they reacted to their first moment of discomfort.
Soon Meredith Haynes with her two children in tow would make their presence felt on the beach. This family looked amazingly contented and enthused to be at this beach. Son Ross, a past student of St Gabriel’s and now a student at Providence Private School and daughter Lala currently a student of St Gabriel’s were there with their mum not only to enjoy the beach but to give support to the St Gabriel’s beach clean-up activities.
Meredith spoke ecstatically of the school’s environmental efforts and commented on the fact that the upcoming school fair was branded Go Green.
Meredith was also delighted to comment on the positive work that she herself had been doing within the general community.
Currently she is working on Bim Baby Guide website (bimbabyguide.com) which is due to be launched in six weeks.
The website will be providing information for young mothers.
Soon the night had crept upon us all and folks started to wend their way home.
