Mystery remains today after the chief executive officer of the Washington University of Barbados, Gopi Venkat Rao, was taken away from the university in handcuffs by police yesterday.

Controversy swirled yesterday after officials from various Government departments and students met on issues that included the setting up of the university, which was established in 2016 and based at the Casa Grande Hotel, St Philip.

Speaking after a near three-hour meeting, Minister of People Empowerment Cynthia Forde said investigations involving legitimacy and living conditions were being carried out after the Ministry of Education reported that there were issues surrounding the university.

“We are here because we received information yesterday [Thursday] from officials from the Ministry of Education that there were some challenges with the school and that there were challenges students and faculty had,” she said. (SB)
