Defending champions Springer Memorial and The Lodge School remain on a collision course to decide the top team in Zone 1 of the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Netball League’s Under-19 Competition.
In the last series of matches, Springer hammered Princess Margaret 41-10 and Lodge were not very gracious to their hosts Queen’s College, dismissing them 41-14.
Even without Sade-Mariah Greenidge, Springer had little trouble from Princess Margaret. The inconsistent Derise Adams finally stepped up with 21 goals from 29 attempts and Khadija Domingo scored 20 from 29.
Springer blew the game wide open in the second quarter, moving from 7-3 to 23-4. Kamilah Hinds scored seven goals and Reneisha Toppin three for Princess Margaret.
Rieah Holder marshalled the Lodge offence from goal attack with 30 goals from 45 attempts and Tamar Piggott supported with 11 from 21, but she needs to be more accurate. Lodge made a better start than Springer (9-3), but their explosion came in the third quarter where they scored 13 goals, while limiting Queen’s College, former multiple finalists to just two.
Both Alyssa Smith (9/19) and Ashley Clarke (5/11) missed too many shots.
Garrison continue to hold the slight edge in Zone 1, despite being held to their lowest score to date in the competition. After blowing out St George 46-16 and beating the highly-fancied St Lucy side 25-20, Garrison squeaked home 20-19 against Alleyne.
Leading by ten goals (19-10) at the end of the third quarter, Garrison scored only one more in the final period. Shannon Hackett and Vanessa Reid-Cox both scored nine goals each, but it was Radica Herbert of Alleyne who stood out with 17 goals from 19 attempts in the losing cause.
Combermere rebounded from a draw to send St Lucy to their second defeat.
No scores were available in the 15-9 result.
Matches resume next Thursday as school is currently on break and there will be a series of Under-16 matches on Tuesday at the Netball Stadium. (SAT)
