Drug stand

BARBADIANS NEED TO stop burying their heads in the sand about the abuse of marijuana here and how it is affecting people’s lives, says High Court Judge Randall Worrell.
And he charged that after decades battling the drug menace, the problem was more commonplace, as Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite lamented last Wednesday about men and women openly smoking marijuana at football games. Therefore, the judge said, it was time for a different approach.
“If we bury our heads in the sand and think we are dealing with it in the most effective manner by criminalizing every person who comes into contact with the use of illegal drugs; and if we bury our heads in the sand and think we have adequate treatment facilities, I think that we definitely will continue along the path where persons would suggest we’re losing the war on drugs,” Justice Worrell told the SUNDAY SUN yesterday.
He said his call for the drug laws to be reviewed to decriminalize marijuana for personal use was to stop those people unnecessarily coming on to the drug treatment court’s programme.
